Keep Treated Wastewater Injections Out of Our Drinking Water Aquifers

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Aquifer Storage and Recovery, or ASR, is a risky scheme that can easily contaminate vital drinking water sources for hundreds of thousands of Georgians who rely on groundwater to drink.

Background

Companies in Georgia are seeking the opportunity to inject treated wastewater and surface water into our aquifers. The General Assembly recognizes the risk that the injection of treated water poses and has twice placed a moratorium on this practice. However, the current moratorium is set to expire in December 2009.

On March 10, the House unanimously passed HB 552 to extend the moratorium on aquifer storage and recovery for five years. Now, the bill moves to the Senate. The Senate should pass HB 552 to protect Georgia's drinking water.

Send a message to your Senator asking them to protect Georgia's drinking water by voting YES on House Bill 552.

Please Vote YES on House Bill 552

Dear Senator,

Please vote YES on House Bill 552 to extend the moratorium on the injection of treated wastewater and surface water into drinking water aquifers in Georgia.

The General Assembly has already twice placed a moratorium on this risky proposal, which can easily contaminate vital drinking water sources for hundreds of thousands of Georgians who rely on groundwater to drink. The damage to the water quality of our aquifers would be impossible to correct on a human time scale and could cause severe negative consequences for coastal Georgia's economy and environment.

The current moratorium on aquifer storage and recovery is set to expire in December 2009. I ask that you vote YES on House Bill 552 to extend the moratorium and protect Georgia's well water.

Sincerely,

Your name and address here
