Do Your Part to Say No to Dirty Coal in Georgia

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Georgia EPD is asking for public comment on draft environmental permits for a dirty coal plant in Middle Georgia. If approved, this coal plant will harm Georgia’s air and water for years to come.

Background

Six of Georgia’s electric membership corporations (EMCs) have formed a consortium to build an 850 megawatt coal plant in Washington County in Middle Georgia. If approved, Plant Washington would become the state’s first coal plant to be constructed in more than 20 years.

The proposed coal plant will need 13-16 million gallons of water a day to operate. It will require building a 30 mile pipeline to the Oconee River and digging 16 wells to extract water during periods of drought.

Plant Washington will emit smog and soot-forming pollution that will degrade Georgia's air quality. It will release more than 100 pounds of mercury each year that becomes toxic when it falls into our waterways poisoning the fish we eat.

The plant will cost more than $2 billion to build. If you belong to one of the EMC territories involved in building the plant, then you are actually paying the costs of the dirty energy. The impact of the pollution, however, will be felt across the state.

In the meantime, Georgia has significant potential for renewable energy and energy efficiency that remains untapped. There is more than 10,000 MW of wind energy potential off the Georgia coast.

I urge you to deny the draft permits for a new dirty coal plant in Georgia

Dear Georgia EPD,

I am concerned about the draft permits recently issued for the Plant Washington coal plant. If permitted, the plant will emit toxic pollutants that will harm Georgia’s air, water and our public health.

In addition, the plant will withdraw up to 16 million gallons of water every day through a 30-mile pipeline to the Oconee River and 15 wells will also be dug along the pipeline to extract groundwater during periods of drought. Our water resources are limited and such massive withdrawals will compete heavily with other water users such as Georgia’s families and local businesses.

As a concerned citizen, I urge Georgia EPD to deny the Plant Washington coal plant draft permits because it will endanger public health.
