Protect Our Waterways from Harmful Water Grabs

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Tell our state leaders to help meet our water needs by putting important protections in place against harmful interbasin transfers.

Background

Each day in Georgia, millions of gallons of water are taken from our rivers and the communities that depend upon them through a process known as interbasin transfer. Water is removed from one river, piped to communities along another river and never returned.

The Chattahoochee River and the communities of LaGrange, West Point and Columbus are robbed of 47 million gallons per day (MGD). The Etowah River and the communities of Cartersville and Rome lose 10 MGD and the Flint River is hijacked of 12 MGD.

Recent proposals would expand Georgia’s interbasin transfer pipeline in a misguided attempt to meet the water needs of Metro Atlanta. Proposals being considered by state leaders include a transfer of 50 MGD from North Georgia’s Lake Burton and the Tallulah River, 100 MGD from Lake Hartwell on the Savannah River, 200 MGD from the Tennessee River and 200 MGD from South Georgia wells.

Harmful interbasin transfers threaten the health of our rivers and the economic futures of downstream communities. Georgia lacks strong laws regulating interbasin transfers, so help us tell state leaders to put these protections in place.

Protect Georgia's rivers from harmful water transfers

Dear Representative,

During the 2010 legislative session, I urge you to carefully consider and pass legislation regulating and restricting interbasin water transfers.

I have recently signed an online petition sponsored by the Georgia Water Coalition, expressing my opposition to the practice of harmful and unnecessary interbasin transfers.

Interbasin transfers can threaten the health of our rivers and the economic futures of downstream communities. Furthermore, they send the wrong message and aggravate relationships with our downstream neighbors, including neighboring states.

Georgia’s current laws governing interbasin transfers are weak and need to be improved.

As a concerned citizen, I urge you to take up this issue in the 2010 legislative session and pass meaningful interbasin transfer legislation.
