Urge Your Legislators to Protect the Environment by Supporting the 2010 Legislative Priorities

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

The 2010 Legislative Session kicked off this week. Please make sure that your legislator hears that environmental protection matters to you.

Background

Georgia's conservation community has selected a few issues on which we will focus our shared efforts during the 2010 legislative session. Our common agenda, called Leading Georgia into a Sustainable Future, includes the following priorities:

Accept No Rollbacks: We will defend current laws that protect our natural resources and work to minimize budget cuts for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and its divisions. This includes efforts to expand tree removal for billboards and rollbacks of recycling and solid waste policies.

Meet Water Needs through Water Conservation First: In response to challenges facing Georgia's water supply, legislators must champion the fastest, least expensive solutions that will ensure clean water for all including requiring meters on each unit of new apartment and condo buildings, restrictions on outdoor watering, reducing leaks in pipes that deliver our water and stronger water efficiency standards for water appliances and buildings.

Secure Stable Transit Funding: To address Georgia's transportation problem and offer convenient and safe alternatives to car travel, the General Assembly must pass measures to allow MARTA to meet its operations and maintenance needs. Further, any new transportation funding should be applicable to meet transit needs in addition to roads and bridges.

Manage Water Effectively and Equitably: The state is tasked with the responsibility of managing our water in the public interest. However, state law currently only requires the issuance of a press release before the Georgia Environmental Protection Division can transfer millions of gallons of water from one river basin for use in another river basin. Requiring a more rigorous analysis would help ensure critical water decisions are based on science and not politics.
